Look off jump shot coming off of ball screen (video)

At the highest levels of basketball it’s not just about beating your defender. It’s about being able to process mentally along with being equipped with your skill set to respond to the rotation of the help defense.

– is the help slow to rotate?

   – is the help over zealous in their help, which will lead to you identifying on open teammate?

-is the help defender showing to corral you and slow you down?

img_0312All these decisions must be made in a split second! Good teams at the highest levels have great defensive rotations and the recover fast out of those rotations.

Effective scorers against help must be able to look off defenders to slow them down, get to over commit and get them to relax and lose urgency.

As you can see on the clip his look off allowed him to get into his shot in a tight space. Dillon Brooks came off the screen staring at the the roller, as he did the defender dropped his hands and momentarily lost urgency. Brooks was measuring up his shot the entire time and that split second of lapse by the defender was enough time to get into his jumper.

In order to improve your look offs, make sure you are repping them out when working on your game and study Chris Paul his look off game is crazy.
